The Office of the Prosecutor General is conducting procedural oversight of the pre-trial investigation in the criminal proceedings regarding the initiation and conduct of aggressive war against Ukraine by representatives of the authorities of the Russian Federation, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, and the irregular illegal armed formations under their control.
As part of this proceeding, the circumstances of the deaths, injuries, capture, and disappearance of hundreds of Ukrainian servicemen during the hostilities in August 2014 near the city of Ilovaisk in the Donetsk region are being investigated.
In order to establish a complete picture of this tragedy, the causes and conditions that contributed to it, investigators and prosecutors are examining the circumstances of violations of international humanitarian law by representatives of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and the irregular illegal armed formations under their control, as well as possible negligence by military officials of the ATO Command and subordinate sectors.
