Protecting the rights of activists, public figures and human rights defenders

 The Office of the Prosecutor General, with the assistance of the Office of the Council of Europe in Ukraine, in February 2021 initiated cooperation         with the largest civil society           and human rights organizations, including such as: “Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union”, Amnesty International, the Charitable Organization “Ukrainian Legal Aid Foundation”, the NGO “La Strada Ukraine”, the NGO “Union of Women of Ukraine”, the Charitable Organization “International Renaissance Foundation”, the Public Union “Reanimation Package of Reforms Coalition”, the Human Rights Center ZMINA, Bihus.info, “Zaborona”, TEXTY.org.ua, “Ukrainska Pravda”, “Censor.NET”, and others.


Among other things, at the mentioned event during the discussion of cooperation plans, it was decided to establish regular working meetings of representatives of the Office of the Prosecutor General and civil society organizations on the most pressing issues regarding the violations of rights and interests of activists, public figures, and human rights defenders in connection with their professional and civic activities.


The first meeting to discuss the state of law enforcement during the persecution, attacks, and other negative consequences regarding public activists and human rights defenders took place on March 18, 2021, with the participation of heads of structural units of the Office of the Prosecutor General, representatives of the Human Rights Center ZMINA, and the Association of Ukrainian Monitors of Human Rights in Law Enforcement Activities.


Currently, the Department of Criminal Law Policy and Investment Protection of the Office of the Prosecutor General is ensuring the organization of such cooperation.

 Regular sectoral meetings on the investigation of criminal offenses committed against activists and human rights defenders are held with representatives of the mentioned organizations on a regular basis.

Today, the Department of Criminal Law Policy and Investment Protection of the Office of the Prosecutor General is already overseeing more than 90 criminal proceedings of this category.
