The death of a two -month -old child - in Sumy region, parents have been informed of suspicion of malicious failure to fulfill their duties

Juvenile prosecutors of the Konotop District Prosecutor's Office reported suspicion against a 35-year-old man and his 31-year-old wife, whose gross failure to fulfill parental duties led to the death of their child.

According to the investigation, the couple had a healthy boy born on April 21, 2024. Subsequently, neither the mother nor the father created normal conditions for their newborn son, in particular, they did not provide him with adequate nutrition, which led to physical immaturity of organs and tissues, a sharp decrease in anthropometric indicators, developmental delays, weight loss, and so on. Moreover, the parents did not seek medical help in a timely manner, and on July 15, 2024, the boy died from a viral infection.

According to the experts' conclusions, there is a causal relationship between the mother's and father's failure to fulfill their duties and the child's death. Timely medical intervention with appropriate treatment could have halted the development of dystrophic changes in the body, improved the state of the immune system, and affected the severity of the course of infectious diseases.

The actions of the parents have been classified as gross failure to fulfill legally established duties for the care of a child, which resulted in severe consequences (Article 166 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators of the Konotop District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Sumy region under the procedural guidance of the prosecutor's office.

Note: according to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until their guilt is proven in a lawful manner and established by a court verdict.
