Miroslav Patskan: Transcarpathia is an outpost of support during the war, and the escape from mobilization is a threat to trust in the law enforcement system of the region

Transcarpathia, which borders 4 European countries and has 20 checkpoints, has unfortunately become one of the leaders among border regions in terms of the number of attempts by conscripted men to illegally cross the border during the full-scale war.

The demand for such "services" has led to numerous attempts to profit from this by organizers and intermediaries. The cost usually amounts to thousands of dollars. For this money, draft evaders are promised unhindered passage through checkpoints and a "safe crossing" of the border, while the organizers expect quick profits. However, in reality, law enforcement actively blocks and exposes them.

Since July 1 alone, over 30 channels of escape from mobilization have been coordinated and exposed in Transcarpathia. Suspicions have been reported against 48 organizers and their accomplices, 44 of whom have been taken into custody. Within the framework of these criminal proceedings, the escape of more than 100 conscripted men has been prevented. The total amount of illegal profits that the criminals expected to receive is nearly 230,000 USD.

"Currently, the work of law enforcement agencies in Transcarpathia is coordinated in such a way that it allows not only to detain individual organizers but also to eliminate entire groups that could have operated in the region for years if they had remained under the radar of law enforcement. No situation goes without appropriate procedural response," — emphasized the head of the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor's Office, Myroslav Patskan.

In just the previous 10 days, suspicions have been reported against:

- an organizer from Mukachevo who attempted to smuggle a conscript for 10,000 USD;

- an employee of the locomotive depot who, to avoid checks at checkpoints, transported men to the border line in the cabin of a locomotive;

- an organizer and two of his accomplices from Mukachevo who attempted to establish a scheme for the illegal transportation of conscripted men;

- three men who were detained in Tyachiv while attempting to smuggle a conscript to Romania;

- a resident of Uzhhorod who organized the illegal transportation of a conscript across the state border of Ukraine for 10,000 USD.

In all cases, prosecutors are seeking to have the suspects taken into custody, emphasizing the importance of courts choosing the highest possible bail amount when determining alternatives.

It is particularly cynical for such channels to be organized by officials who are supposed to block them. Recently, prosecutors sent indictments to court against three inspectors of the Transcarpathian customs who planned to establish channels for escaping mobilization.

In one case, a customs officer and his acquaintance, an employee of another law enforcement agency, received 32,000 USD for the illegal transportation of two conscripted men. Two other customs officers were detained while organizing the illegal escape of a Kyiv resident to Hungary for 8,000 USD. All of them are currently in the status of defendants.

"The Transcarpathian Prosecutor's Office will continue to respond fundamentally and systematically to every attempt to illegally transport conscripted men. No situation goes without appropriate procedural response," Myroslav Patskan concluded.
