Mass death of cats in the Kyiv region: the woman was informed of suspicion
24.12.2025
Under the procedural guidance of the prosecutors of the Obukhiv District Prosecutor's Office of Kyiv Region, a 55-year-old woman has been notified of suspicion of cruel treatment of animals, which led to the death of a large number of cats (Part 3 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
She has been detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. At the prosecutor's request, the court has chosen a preventive measure for her — detention for a period of 60 days.
According to the investigation, the suspect took in stray animals allegedly for temporary care. She received food and other supplies from volunteers, but instead of providing help and finding families for the animals, she left them to fend for themselves. This led to their death.
It is worth noting that on December 18, 2025, a zoo volunteer contacted the police. He reported that animals were being kept in terrible conditions in one of the houses in the village of Kremenyshe.
During the inspection, law enforcement officers discovered dozens of cats living in cramped and unsanitary conditions, without proper care. They managed to rescue 39 cats, which were subsequently transferred to a shelter where they receive the necessary assistance and care.
The bodies of 51 deceased animals have been sent to the Kyiv City Veterinary Medicine Hospital for examinations and to determine the cause of death.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing. The woman faces a prison sentence of 5 to 8 years.
