Five Russian soldiers who tortured civilians during the occupation of Sumy Oblast have been identified and convicted

Under the public prosecution of the Deputy Head of the Sumy Regional Prosecutor's Office, Oleksiy Lyashenko, five servicemen of the Russian Federation have been found guilty of violating the laws and customs of war (Part 2 of Article 28/Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment.

In court, it was proven that on March 13, 2022, during the occupation of the city of Trostianets in the Okhtyrka district, armed Russian soldiers detained four civilian men on the street. The occupiers took them to the territory of a local elevator (grain storage), where they set up a torture chamber.

The detainees were handcuffed, and sticky tape was wrapped around their heads with hats. One of them was beaten by the occupiers and they simulated his execution by shooting into the air.

The next day, two of the detainees were transferred to a basement. The Russian soldiers kept them in complete darkness for four days, without sufficient drinking water and food, at an air temperature of -10 degrees Celsius.

The other two men were taken to the railway station building, where they were handed over to other occupiers. Those interrogated them, using physical violence.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.

Preventive measures in the form of detention have been chosen for the convicted, and they have also been declared wanted.

The special pre-trial investigation was conducted by investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Sumy region.
