Prosecutors of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor's Office proved in court the guilt of a resident of Dnipro, who killed a public figure, People's Deputy of Ukraine of the VII convocation Iryna Farion.

The punishment imposed by the court is life imprisonment.

The murder took place on July 19, 2024 in Lviv. Near Iryna Farion's apartment, the attacker approached her and shot her in the head from a distance of about two meters. After that, he fled the scene.

Iryna Farion was hospitalized, but she could not be saved. On the same day, she died from a penetrating gunshot wound to the head.

Already on July 25, 2024, the suspect was found and detained in his apartment in Dnipro, and the next day he was notified of suspicion.

Five months later, prosecutors sent an indictment against him to court.

During the trial, the prosecution proved that the man committed the murder in connection with the performance of the victim's public duty and for reasons of national intolerance.

In particular, the convict adhered to views on alleged "national discrimination against citizens of Ukraine who communicate in Russian."

Iryna Farion, known for her public position in defense of the Ukrainian language and culture, he perceived as a person who allegedly "splits national unity."

On this basis, he had an intention to kill, which he later realized by firing a fatal shot.

From the very arrest, the man has been continuously in custody, where he will remain until the verdict comes into force.

The convict was charged with premeditated murder of a person in connection with the performance of his public duty, for reasons of national intolerance, as well as acquisition, carrying, possession of firearms without a permit provided for by law (paragraphs 8, 14 of part 2 of Article 115, part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The pre-trial investigation was carried out by investigators of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv region with the operational support of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv region, the Department for Combating Cybercrimes in Lviv region, the Department of Strategic Investigations in Lviv region and the Security Service of Ukraine.

At present, the court verdict has not entered into force and can be appealed.

The verdict comes into force after the expiration of the term for appeal.
