The deputy of the settlement council in Zhytomyr region was reported suspicion of extortion of $ 20,000 for influencing the investigation

A 51-year-old deputy of the Chernyakhiv City Council, head of one of its permanent commissions, learned about the investigation concerning officials from the education department and a contracting organization that was building sports facilities in the community.

According to the investigation, citing his "connections" in law enforcement, he demanded 20 thousand US dollars from a representative of the contractor. For this money, he promised to arrange for the closure of the criminal proceedings with high-ranking law enforcement officials.

The fact of the deputy's illegal actions was established by law enforcement during the conduct of covert investigative actions, and the deputy was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine immediately after receiving the full amount.

Under the procedural guidance of the Korostyshiv District Prosecutor's Office, on 30.09.25, the man was informed of the suspicion of committing a criminal offense under part 2 of Article 15, part 4 of Article 190, part 4 of Article 27, part 3 of Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – attempted acquisition of someone else's property in large amounts by deception and incitement to provide unlawful benefits to officials in responsible positions.

The suspect was chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention with the possibility of posting a bail of 454,200 UAH. Investigative actions are ongoing.

The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the Department No. 1 of the Zhytomyr District Police Department No. 1 of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Zhytomyr region with operational support from the Security Service of Ukraine in the Zhytomyr region.

Note: according to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until their guilt is proven in a lawful manner and established by a court verdict.
